The loss gives Baylor the series win with game three left to play Sunday.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech (16-12, 0-2 Big 12) fell 8-2 in game two of the three-game series against Baylor (20-5, 2-0 Big 12) Saturday evening at Rocky Johnson Field.
The Bears went .400 at the plate on the day with 12 hits, while the Red Raiders recorded five hits on a .192 hitting clip.
Baylor jumped out to the early lead after a four-run second inning. A leadoff hit by pitch and a double to left put two runners in scoring position for the Bears. Back-to-back RBI singles scored two runs and kept two on with just one out. The Red Raiders made an early pitching change, bringing in Morgan Hornback in relief of Erin Edmoundson after 1.1 innings. A two-out double down the third base line would score two more runs to give Baylor the 4-0 lead.
The Bears looked to bust things open even further in the third, loading the bases with no outs after a pair of singles and a hit batter. The Red Raider defense stepped up big as Karli Hamilton made a diving catch in left center and threw the tagging runner out at third for a double play. One more run scored, but the damage was limited thanks to Tech’s defensive efforts.
Baylor increased the lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning, loading the bases with no outs for the second straight inning. One run scored on a fielder’s choice play at second base and a single through the left side brought another run home.
Tech got a couple of runs back in the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff walk from Breanna Russell and a single from Kelcy Leach put two Red Raiders on base with no outs. The Bears then attempted to pick off Abbie Orrick, pinch running for Russell, and the throw went into the outfield allowing Orrick to advance to third and score. Riley Love doubled on the next at bat to move Alanna Barraza, running for Leach, to third. A wild pitch would push the second run across and bring the game back within five, 7-2.
A solo home run from Goose McGlaun to lead off the sixth gave Baylor it’s final run of the game.
The Red Raiders couldn’t string together a rally in the sixth or seventh, falling to the Bears 8-2 in game two.
Edmoundson (7-5) started the game for the Red Raiders and re-entered in the top of the fifth to finish out the contest. She gave up five runs on five hits and struck out four batters. Hornback went 2.2 innings for Tech, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Sidney Holman-Mansell (6-0) picked up the win for the Bears to remain spotless on the season. She gave up two runs on five hits while striking out six in 6.0 innings of work. Maren Judisch closed out the game for Baylor, tossing a hitless seventh inning.
Russell reached base three times in the game with two walks and one hit for Texas Tech.
The series finale is set for Sunday at noon at Rocky Johnson Field. The Red Raiders look to take a game from the series while the Bears go for the sweep.
